CENSUS – as well as rate record books:::
Despite their apparent exactness, the census statistics for dwellings and occupations are, of course, only approximate. As pointed out by Sam B. Warner in a study of Boston, USA, heads of households in the nineteenth century often regarded the gatherer of statistics as a potential tax collector and possibly therefore withheld information concerning personal property, its size and its use. There is evidence of a similar tendency in Victoria. In 1911, for example, Collingwood Council noticed that when its valuer asked householders for the number of occupants the number was commonly understated; the total was 11 per cent lower than the population according to the census, an enormous difference. If the figures given to the valuer were underestimated, then it is reasonable to suspect also that figures given to the census-taker, particularly as municipal officers were often employed as census takers. In 1857, for example, East Collingwood’s first town clerk was the local census-taker; he probably would have obtained assistance or information from the council’s rate collector, and municipal rates then were a widely resisted innovation. pp 31-33 The Inner Suburbs: The Evolution of an Industrial Area by Bernard Barrett, Melbourne University Press, 1971
—in addition to this another example of discrepancies…
…in 1937…an unusually exhaustive inspection of back yards revealed poor people living in tiny outhouses more suited as wood sheds or dog kennels…
p 33 The Inner Suburbs: The Evolution of an Industrial Area by Bernard Barrett, Melbourne University Press, 1971
[[and in a separate instance, another example…]] -likewise…some persons who described themselves as skilled craftsmen were either unemployed or were currently forced to work at another occupation. And the movement back and forth between ‘contractor’, ‘mason’ and ‘labourer’ is difficult to measure, being geared to slumps and booms.

IRON PRE FAB HOUSES 1850s
iron pre fab houses are marketed as fireproof and suprerior to wooden houses until the San Fransisco Fires prove otherwise, May 3-4 1851 SAN FRANCISCO.
See this blog:::

In the prefab world in 1849, iron houses were a relatively recent invention. The chance for gold rush profits accelerated their development, as just about every foundry, blacksmith, and roofer decided to get into the housing business.

Iron models were cheaper than wood frame houses and much easier to disassemble and re-erect in a new location, which seems like a nice back-up plan for a buyer following gold strikes. Plus, iron houses were marketed as “fire proof.”

Then the fire-proof claims took a big hit during the big San Francisco conflagration on May 3–4, 1851.Men who thought they were safe inside their fireproof buildings soon found that the doors swelled shut from the heat, trapping them in a noxious inferno. And while the structures didn’t burn, they certainly did melt. Yikes.

When all had cooled, to cut up and haul off the warped debris of an iron house cost more than building a replacement wood frame building.

MARBLES
CLAY MARBLES
from: https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/articles/16941 ‘what are marbles made from’
Playthings recovered from the Little Lonsdale archaeological site in Melbourne, dated around 1880, include porcelain, glass and clay marbles. Clay marbles – known as commonies – were the cheapest. John Clarke recalls glass marbles that were ‘much coveted, which my parents roared with laughter at because they used to be found in the tops of lemonade bottles’. These lemonade bottle marbles, which held the pressure of the carbonated contents, were typically plain and rough to touch. Marbles made for blind baking of pies could also be used for play.
