To calculate the area of a room, you need to measure its length and width. Because you want the result in square metres, both measurements should be taken in metres.

To calculate a rectangular room’s floor/ceiling area in square metres, multiply its length in metres by its width in metres. If the room is an odd shape, break the shape down into individual rectangles, calculate the area in square metres for each rectangle, then add the areas of all the rectangles for the room’s total area in square metres. To calculate the room volume in cubic metres, multiply the floor area in square metres by the (floor to ceiling) height in metres.

To calculate the total external glazed area (area of all glazed windows and doors), measure the area (width x height) of all glazed windows and doors and add together. Note the wall orientation of each window and door.

To calculate the total external wall area, measure the area (width x height) of all external walls and add together, then subtract the total external glazed area calculated above.

To calculate the total internal wall area, measure the area (width x height) of all internal walls and add together.
