this is where I am putting everything that I cannot place exactly because I’m unable to cross reference the numbered address with a location on a street map from the same period AND I’m counting on the fact that street numbering has changed over time.
NUMERATION
streets running east to west:
“The commencing number 1, will (as a rule), in Melbourne, be found on the north side of the streets running east and west; and on the west side of those running north and south…All streets in Melbourne running north and south, commence their numbers from the Yarra, the southern boundary; those running east and west from Elizabeth-street, which divides the town into distinct parts.” p26 of Sands Kenny and Co street directory 1860
so in plain english:
streets running east to west:
ie number one will always start parliament end of city on the north side of the street, even numbers on the south side, working down to southern cross end.
Streets running north to south:
numbers start at yarra side of cbd and number one starts on the west side towards southern cross and even numbers are on the eastern side of the street.
